fMRI reveals hippocampal abnormalities in Williams syndrome
Posterior representation of the shape change in the hippocampus in Williams syndrome (WS). WS is characterized by dysmorphic features, mental retardation, and neurocognitive abnormalities resulting from a microdeletion of genes on chromosome 7q11.23. A functional MRI study of WS patients by Meyer-Lindenberg et al. (page 1888) now shows a profound reduction in blood flow to the hippocampus of WS patients, accompanied by reduced synaptic activity and alterations in hippocampal shape.
